The Boston Red Sox are off to a positive start after firing manager Alex Cora, winning their first game under interim manager Chad Tracy.
Boston elected to part ways with Cora after a poor start to the season, bringing Triple-A Worcester manager Tracy to lead the team in a different direction. The Red Sox responded with a well-fought 5-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles. Though Tracy has had success down in Triple-A and has helped develop multiple young stars on Boston's roster, including Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer, will he be the team's long-term manager?
Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow didn't rule out the possibility of adding another permanent manager at some point during the 2026 season. While naming a few potential fits for the position, MassLive's Chris Cotillo stated that even Dustin Pedroia "could be in play" as the team's long-term manager.
"My guess on likelihood of next Red Sox full-time manager: Chad Tracy can win it with a strong showing here but Rocco Baldelli should be squarely in the mix," Cotillo wrote in a post to X on Sunday. "I'm less bullish on the Breslow/David Ross relationship than others. Dustin Pedroia could be in play if FSG wants the PR win."
Red Sox fans would be ecstatic if Pedroia took over as the team's next manager. The former MVP spent his entire 14-season career in Boston, helping lead the team to three World Series championships, and is one of the team's most beloved players in recent memory.
Tracy could end up excelling in his new role, and he has earned his shot at managing the team. If the Red Sox continue to struggle, however, Pedroia could be a great option to consider for manager, offering plenty of experience as a four-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glove winner.
