One month into the MLB season, the minor leagues are already buzzing with excitement. Prospects are more vital than ever, and player development has reached new heights—especially on the mound. With cutting-edge tools and top-notch coaching, young talent is thriving like never before. Here are six prospects—three hitters and three pitchers—who are off to blazing starts and could soon make an impact at the big-league level.
SS George Lombard Jr., New York Yankees
Our No. 26 prospect entering the season, Lombard just earned a promotion to Triple-A and wasted no time making his mark—going 1 for 3 with two walks and scoring from first base on a single in his debut. At just 20 years old, he slashed .312/.400/.571 with four home runs in 20 Double-A games before the move. That power surge is notable: he hit only nine homers in 132 games last year but already has four in 21 contests this season. A gifted defender, Lombard is splitting time between shortstop and third base—a key detail, given that Ryan McMahon has struggled at the plate for the Yankees. New York typically fast-tracks top prospects through Triple-A; Ben Rice, Cam Schlittler, Anthony Volpe, and Austin Wells all spent about a month there before getting called up. Lombard could follow the same path. MLB ETA: Summer 2026
IF Pedro Ramírez, Chicago Cubs
Don’t let the 5-foot-9, 165-pound frame fool you—Ramírez is a switch-hitting dynamo with elite bat-to-ball skills. The newly 22-year-old is hitting .306/.384/.604 with eight homers and 11 steals in 28 Triple-A games. His 91.8% in-zone contact rate ranks among the top 10 in Triple-A, well above the league average of 82.4%. After a failed experiment in left field last year, Ramírez has settled in at second and third base. The Cubs have their entire infield locked up long-term (Alex Bregman, Nico Hoerner, Dansby Swanson), which could make Ramírez either an overqualified utility option or a prime trade chip. Any team needing infield help and willing to part with pitching should call Chicago immediately. MLB ETA: Summer 2026
