Fresh off their historic Women's ODI World Cup victory in 2025, the Indian women's cricket team isn't resting on their laurels. Instead, they're setting their sights on another prize: the 2026 Women's T20 World Cup in England, and they're bringing a fierce determination with them.
Batter Jemimah Rodrigues, a key player in that ODI triumph, made it clear the team's hunger hasn't been satisfied. "Winning one has only made us want to win two," she said at an event in Mumbai. "Usually, after a World Cup, teams can get complacent. But this team is different. We are hungrier to win again."
That hunger is translating into early action. While the squad was only announced on Saturday, Rodrigues revealed that preparations for the T20 showpiece—set to run from June 12 to July 5 in England—began much sooner. "The first series we played after the World Cup was against Sri Lanka in Vizag in December, which we won 5-0. That's when I told the team in a huddle that this is where our journey for the next World Cup begins," she shared at the IISM Degree Distribution Ceremony, where head coach Amol Muzumdar was also present.
India will sharpen their skills with a week-long camp at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru starting May 10. Muzumdar emphasized the team's commitment to preparation: "Preparation has always been integral to this team. We believe in getting ready for every challenge, and we are on the right track. We'll look to have a productive camp before heading into the World Cup."
However, the team will face a challenge without all-rounder Amanjot Kaur, who has been ruled out due to a serious back injury requiring surgery. Muzumdar acknowledged the loss: "It's difficult to replace someone like Amanjot, who has been performing consistently. But injuries are part of the game. We hope she comes back stronger."
Rodrigues also reflected on India's recent 4-1 T20I series defeat in South Africa, framing it as a valuable learning experience. "Failures sometimes teach you more than winning everything. It has given us a reality check. The team is taking it in the right spirit, working hard, and preparing well. We'll come back stronger."
With a blend of recent success, early preparation, and a hunger that shows no signs of fading, India's women's team is gearing up for what promises to be an exciting T20 World Cup campaign. Fans can expect a squad that's ready to leave it all on the field—and maybe bring home another trophy.
