Wild Theory Suggests Vikings Owners Could Sell the Team

The Minnesota Vikings have been one of the NFL's most aggressive spenders in recent seasons, dropping a league-leading $350 million on player payroll in 2024. But a dramatic shift in 2026—where they've slashed spending to just $226 million, the second-lowest in the league—has sparked a wild theory: could the Wilf family be preparing to sell the team?

The speculation comes from Charley Walters of the Pioneer Press, who drew a bold comparison to the Minnesota Twins' ownership situation. Walters suggests the Vikings' sudden payroll cut mirrors the Twins' approach before they put the team up for sale. "It's beginning to look as if Vikings ownership now could be mirroring Twins ownership, which has sought to sell its team," Walters wrote.

But here's where the theory gets tricky: the Wilfs have never shied away from spending big. They invested heavily in 2024 and 2025, building what they believed was a championship-caliber roster. The 2026 cutback, Walters argues, could be a reset—a deliberate step back to make the franchise more attractive to buyers. "If the Wilfs were to sell the Vikings today, they could get between $8 billion and $9 billion," he notes.

For fans, the timing is curious. The Vikings boasted a Top 3 defense last season and added quarterback Kyler Murray in March—hardly the moves of a team waving the white flag. Walters counters that this "sure looks like a rebuilding year," pointing out that the Wilfs have yet to name a permanent general manager since firing Kwesi Adofo-Mensah in January.

The comparison to Red McCombs' tenure in 2005 is particularly striking. McCombs slashed payroll to the bone before selling the Vikings to the Wilfs for $600 million—a far cry from today's potential $8 billion-plus price tag. Whether history is repeating itself or this is just a temporary cap reset, one thing is clear: the Vikings' financial strategy has everyone talking.
