The New York Mets are in full scramble mode, and their latest move has the baseball world raising eyebrows. After a disastrous start to the season, the team has promoted top outfield prospect A.J. Ewing to the Major Leagues—but critics say the timing reeks of desperation.

Ewing, just 21 years old, was called up after only 13 games at Triple-A Syracuse. For context, most top prospects spend at least a full season at that level to refine their skills. But the Mets, desperate for a spark, are rolling the dice early.

According to The Athletic's Will Sammon, the reaction from around the league has been telling. "The common sentiment from executives, scouts, and agents across the league following news of Ewing’s promotion sounded considerably less enthused: The Mets reek of desperation," Sammon wrote.

Ironically, that desperation may have paid off—at least for one day. Ewing launched his first career MLB home run on Thursday against the Detroit Tigers, offering a glimpse of the potential that made him a top prospect. But one swing doesn't erase the concerns.

"For as desperate a move as it was, calling up Ewing to play center field on an everyday basis was also necessary," Sammon added. "He was the best option. Says a lot about him. Says more about the state of the Mets."

The reality is that Ewing likely needs more minor league at-bats to develop properly. His promotion is a temporary fix for a team that's been hit hard by injuries to key players like Luis Robert Jr., Francisco Lindor, and Jorge Polanco. Once those stars return, Ewing is almost guaranteed to head back to Syracuse.

For now, Mets fans can enjoy the rookie's moment in the sun. But in a season already marked by struggles, this move feels less like a long-term solution and more like a team grasping at straws.
