The Golden State Warriors might be in for a game-changing stroke of luck at the NBA draft lottery. According to a new mock draft from Bleacher Report, the Warriors have landed the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft—a scenario that, while unlikely, could reshape the franchise's future.
Here's the context: The Warriors are currently projected to hold the No. 11 pick, giving them just a 2% chance of winning the lottery. But in Zach Buckley's latest mock draft, Golden State defies the odds and secures the top spot. And with that pick, Buckley has the Warriors selecting BYU freshman sensation AJ Dybantsa.
Dybantsa has been turning heads all season, leading the Cougars to an NCAA Tournament berth while averaging 25.5 points on 51% shooting from the field. Buckley describes Dybantsa as a prospect with "the highest ceiling and the fewest risks" in a loaded 2026 class that also includes Kansas' Darryn Peterson, Duke's Cameron Boozer, and Arkansas' Darius Acuff Jr.
"He just feels on a different tier from those prospects," Buckley writes. "His scoring punch is knockout-powered at every level, his decision-making and table-setting are in perpetual states of improvement, and he has the blueprint for becoming a versatile, disruptive defender."
For the Warriors, Dybantsa could be the missing piece. Golden State has long needed a player who can create his own shot and get a bucket in crunch time—and that's exactly what Dybantsa does best. The pick would mark a departure from the team's usual system, but with Steve Kerr's future uncertain, it could be exactly the kind of fresh start the Dubs need.
The NBA draft lottery is set for Sunday, May 10. Until then, Warriors fans can dream about what a Dybantsa-era in the Bay might look like.
