The Washington Commanders entered the 2026 NFL Draft with a clear need at wide receiver, and they played the board perfectly. While early rumors suggested they might target a receiver with the No. 7 overall pick, the depth of this year's wideout class allowed them to shore up their defense first. When their second pick rolled around at No. 71 overall—remember, they were without a second-round pick (and a fourth) from last year's trade for left tackle Laremy Tunsil—the board fell right in their favor.

General Manager Adam Peters had a buffet of receiver options, and he chose Clemson's Antonio Williams. While Williams didn't wow scouts with explosive athleticism like some other prospects, his game is built on craftsmanship. He's a polished route runner, excels after the catch, and has the versatility to line up both outside and in the slot. Though many draft analysts peg him as a slot receiver at the next level, Peters has hinted that the Commanders see him making plays on the outside.

ESPN draft analyst Field Yates is already a believer. In his post-draft column, Yates named Williams among his five favorite picks of the third round. "Tough, reliable, good after the catch, selfless and with strong hands," Yates wrote. "Those are among the ways to describe Williams, who gives the Commanders a potential WR2 next to Terry McLaurin. The rookie will take on a slot role for the Commanders, whose depth was immensely tested in 2025 amid injuries. Williams was No. 64 in my final rankings."

By selecting Williams, Washington landed a productive college player who can contribute from day one. Don't be surprised if he quickly becomes one of quarterback Jayden Daniels' favorite targets—this is a pick that could pay off big for years to come.
