Tyran Stokes, a Louisville native who is the consensus No. 1 basketball recruit in the Class of 2026, has announced his college decision.

The 6-foot-7 forward out of Rainier Beach High School in Seattle did not pick his hometown Louisville Cardinals or the in-state Kentucky Wildcats. He went with Kansas instead, revealing his commitment Tuesday on ESPN.

Both Pat Kelsey and Mark Pope's programs were among Stokes' top five contenders last October. But roughly a month later, he eliminated UofL from contention — leaving UK, the Jayhawks and Oregon.

Stokes, 18, lived in Louisville until age 9, at which point he moved to the West Coast with his mother. He was named a MaxPreps All-American as a junior at Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, California, and again as a senior at Rainier Beach, which brought home a second consecutive Class 3A state championship in 2025-26.

His final stat line with the Vikings, per MaxPreps: 31 points, 13 rebounds, six assists and four steals per game.

"He is one of the most versatile weapons in all of high school basketball," 247Sports analyst Travis Branham said in January. "He is so strong; he's so long and such a powerful and explosive athlete. Then, you add in the mixture of his ability to see the floor, make the right passes, push the ball ahead, push a break off the bounce, defend multiple positions, rebound — this kid can flat-out do it all. When he gets into college, he's going to be a mismatch nightmare."

Stokes had been on UofL and UK's radars since Kelsey and Pope's predecessors were at the helm. Kenny Payne extended a scholarship offer from the Cards in October 2022, and John Calipari followed on behalf of the Cats in November 2023. He took official visits to both programs under Kelsey (Oct. 4, 2024) and Pope (June 8).

Stokes was back in Louisville last summer and was asked during a back-to-school drive he organized at Shawnee Park what he was looking for in a college. Here's what he said: "Definitely development. A good foundation, someone who has fans and puts their all into the school. Not just someone who says, 'Oh, we have a good football team or a good basketball team.' I want to go somewhere where I can have a good time actually experiencing college — go to a nice football game, have a nice baseball team to go (watch). Just experience school.

"And a school that's not going to duck the smoke," he added. "That's it. I don't like ducking smoke, so I want everybody on the schedule. If I could get North Carolina, Duke, anybody on the schedule, that's all I want."
