Apr. 28—ROCHESTER — Cameron Quade has had coaching in his blood for about as long as he can remember.
He was serious enough about it that he made it his major at Mayville State University (N.D.). The 27-year-old graduated with a sports coaching major at the school.
"I always wanted to be that person to help kids reach their athletic potential and their potential as humans," said Quade, a 2017 graduate of Cannon Falls High School.
Well, his next chance to do that will be at Rochester John Marshall where he has accepted the head coaching position of its girls basketball team. Quade replaces Chad Ohl, who directed the Rockets for three seasons.
JM finished 6-21 this past season, 14-13 in 2024-25 and 19-8 in 2023-24.
Quade comes with experience. He coached the Randolph boys for the past three years and before that was an assistant at the college level, at Mayville State and Williston State (N.D.), a Division I junior college.
Quade finished 30-48 in his three years at Randolph.
"We just weren't at the speed that I was looking for to get better," Quade said. "We were sharing athletes with different sports and it was a challenge to get kids in the gym. I was looking for something different intensity wise and commitment wise. That led me to the JM job."
Now that he is at JM, he is looking for that commitment to be there.
"As far as the program goes, everything is built on trust; we have to put in the time in the gym and we have to be consistent with our approach," Quade said. "As we do that there should be tangible proof that we've gotten better. And as you do that you build trust in the coaching staff and the players."
Quade says he makes it his goal to get 1 percent better every day as a program.
"The daily quest should be to be better today than you were yesterday," Quade said. "As a coach you've got to fall in love with the process."
Quade says his desire is to hit the ground running this summer and see where the program is at.
