In a poll taken by MLB experts, Detroit Tigers infielder Kevin McGonigle is a favorite to win the American League Rookie of the Year Award.

The Detroit Tigers have a rising star on their hands, and his name is Kevin McGonigle. The 21-year-old infielder has not only exceeded expectations on the field but has also earned a massive eight-year, $150 million contract extension. Through 39 games this season, McGonigle is batting .293 with an impressive .830 OPS, and he's showing elite plate discipline by drawing 23 walks against just 21 strikeouts.

While McGonigle has hit a bit of a cold spell recently—slashing just .192 with a .515 OPS over his last seven games—that hasn't derailed his bid for one of baseball's most prestigious honors. According to a recent poll of MLB experts, McGonigle is a strong contender for the American League Rookie of the Year Award, finishing second with 14 first-place votes. Only Chicago White Sox first baseman Munetaka Murakami (20 first-place votes) sits ahead of him in the race.

What makes McGonigle's rookie campaign so special? As MLB.com's Jason Foster noted, "The fun thing about this list of rookies is that almost all of them lead their peer group in something, illustrating the depth of the class. In McGonigle's case, he led all MLB rookies in on-base percentage (.395), hits (43) and doubles (11) entering Monday, and was tied for the lead in triples (two). He hit .327 with a .946 OPS in April, collecting 32 hits along the way."

Among all rookies, McGonigle currently leads in batting average, ranks second to Murakami in walks, and is tied for the lead in triples. With the American League Central division looking wide open, both McGonigle's Tigers and Murakami's White Sox could be in the playoff hunt. That postseason push might just tip the scales in the Rookie of the Year voting, making this one of the most exciting races to watch as the season unfolds.
