Liverpool might have another shot at landing a Premier League-proven defender they targeted in January, according to a fresh update from a Sky Sports reporter.

As the winter transfer window wound down, the Reds were reportedly in talks for a loan move for Lutsharel Geertruida. The 25-year-old Dutch international has spent this season on loan at Sunderland from RB Leipzig, where he's made 26 Premier League appearances and helped the Black Cats secure a comfortable mid-table finish.

Now, with the season winding down, Geertruida's future is up in the air. Sunderland have decided not to trigger the €23 million option to buy, meaning he'll head back to Leipzig this summer. But according to Sky Germany's Florian Plettenberg, a permanent exit from the Bundesliga side is looking likely.

"Lutsharel Geertruida will not stay at Sunderland beyond the summer," Plettenberg posted on X. "The 25 y/o will initially return to RB Leipzig, but a permanent departure is considered likely. Initial enquiries have already arrived, with interest from clubs across Europe's top five leagues. Contract with RB valid until 2029."

While Plettenberg didn't name specific clubs, the timing couldn't be better for Liverpool to revisit their interest. Geertruida has proven he can handle the physicality and pace of the Premier League during his time at Sunderland, and with his immediate future uncertain, the Reds could find a willing seller in Leipzig.

For a squad that's always looking to strengthen at the back, this could be the second chance Liverpool needed to add a versatile, top-flight tested defender to their ranks.
