In a compelling day of County Championship cricket at Trent Bridge, Nottinghamshire seized the upper hand against Surrey, dismissing in-form opener Dom Sibley for 77 in the final session to leave the visitors at 211-4, still trailing by 204 runs.

Sibley, who has been making a strong case for an England Test recall with his recent purple patch, battled for over four hours against a high-quality Nottinghamshire attack. The 30-year-old opener, who last played for England in August 2021, was looking for his third century in as many matches but fell just short, caught behind off left-arm spinner Liam Patterson-White in the last half hour of play.

Earlier, Nottinghamshire had resumed on 317-7 and added 98 runs for their final two wickets. Joe Clarke, who had made a superb 129, fell without adding to his overnight score, edging Sean Abbott to wicketkeeper Jamie Smith. But Olly Stone and Fergus O'Neill added 24 for the ninth wicket before Stone and Josh Tongue plundered another 74 for the 10th, frustrating Surrey's bowlers on a difficult morning.

The real story of the day, however, was the bowling duel between two England pace prospects. Stone and Tongue, playing together for Nottinghamshire for the first time, gave captain Steven Mullaney the luxury of attacking from both ends with genuine pace. Tongue finished with 2-38, while Stone was unlucky not to add to his tally as Surrey's batsmen dug in.

Dan Lawrence survived a difficult chance on 43 and was 52 not out at the close, providing some resistance alongside Sibley before the latter's late dismissal swung momentum back to the defending champions on a day that had seen little separation between last year's top two sides.
