The Rio Grande Rivalry isn't going anywhere—it's just getting a new chapter. While Utah State prepares to leave the Mountain West this summer for the revamped Pac-12, the Aggies and the University of New Mexico Lobos announced Thursday morning a two-year home-and-home series that keeps their men's basketball rivalry alive in nonconference play. And for Lobos fans, that means a double dose of Aggies action at The Pit this fall.
Here's the breakdown: Utah State will visit Albuquerque on November 29, with the Lobos traveling to Logan for a return game during the 2027-28 season. Meanwhile, New Mexico State's Aggies are also set for a two-year home-and-home series, though only one game per season—a shift from the twice-a-year format that defined this rivalry for most of the last century. For now, both sides have opted to keep it to a single annual clash.
This rivalry has serious recent pedigree. The two programs have combined to win the last three Mountain West championships—Utah State in 2024 and 2026, and UNM in 2025. Both have been NCAA Tournament bubble regulars, and coaches on both sides have consistently stressed the challenge (and necessity) of landing quality nonconference opponents. Last season, Utah State's NET ranking of 25 made them a Quad 1 matchup for the Lobos in both meetings, while UNM's 46th-place NET made them a Quad 1 win for Utah State at The Pit and a Quad 2 win in Logan. Securing those high-level games has been no easy task.
With the Mountain West shifting to a 10-team, 18-game league schedule (nine home, nine away), and the NCAA now allowing 32 total games per season, UNM second-year coach Eric Olen has been clear: the nonconference slate will be critical. The new-look conference may not offer as many Quad 1 and 2 opportunities, so every game counts.
As for the in-state showdown with New Mexico State—once a two-game series split between Albuquerque and Las Cruces for most of the last 100 years—it's been trimmed to a single game per season for the next two years. While exact dates are still being finalized, both coaching staffs are working under the understanding that NMSU will visit The Pit this season, with the Lobos heading to the Pan American Center in 2027-28. Neither side has shown much enthusiasm for a doubleheader, but the financial reality is hard to ignore: this rivalry has long delivered the biggest nonconference home ticket revenue for both programs, making every game a must-see event for fans and a crucial piece of each athletic department's budget.
