The Cincinnati Reds' road trip through Pittsburgh and Chicago was supposed to be a statement. Instead, it became a nightmare—one that left the team battered, bruised, and searching for answers.

On Thursday, the Reds wrapped up a miserable 0-7 stretch with an 8-3 loss to the Cubs at Wrigley Field. But the final score only tells part of the story. The bigger blow came in the fourth inning when starting pitcher Rhett Lowder walked off the mound with what the team is calling "shoulder discomfort."

Lowder, who had already been struggling after the worst start of his 14-game career last week, left trailing 1-0 after walking the first two batters of the inning. Catcher Tyler Stephenson called for the trainer, and the young right-hander was done for the day—and likely headed to the injured list.

The timing couldn't be worse. The Reds began this road trip sitting in first place in the National League Central. After being swept by the Cubs, they now find themselves in last place, six games behind Chicago.

And the pitching staff? It's in shambles.

Ace Hunter Greene won't return until after the All-Star break following elbow surgery to remove bone chips back in March. Brandon Williamson, still recovering from Tommy John surgery, was just moved to the 60-day injured list with "shoulder fatigue." Closer Emilio Pagán was carted off the field two days ago with a hamstring injury that will sideline him for two months.

There was a glimmer of hope: No. 2 starter Nick Lodolo was set to return Friday from a blister issue that has kept him out all season. But that optimism evaporated with Lowder's sudden exit.

It's a stunning fall for a team that seemed to have pitching depth to spare just a few months ago. Now, with every start comes another injury, and every loss deepens the hole. The Reds head home battered, winless, and wondering what's next.
