The Southland Rebels baseball team is proving that momentum doesn't take a day off. Fresh off a deep run to the state basketball tournament in late March, the diamond squad has seamlessly transitioned into spring, hitting the ground running with a perfect 3-0 start to their season.
This hot start was solidified with a gritty 2-1 victory over Mabel-Canton on Tuesday, a classic pitchers' duel that showcased resilience. Trailing 1-0 entering the bottom of the sixth inning, the Rebels manufactured a comeback without a single hit in the frame. Key walks and aggressive baserunning allowed Cael Smith and Henry Wiste to score on wild pitches, flipping the script and securing the lead.
Senior ace Easton Meyer was the story on the mound, slamming the door shut with a complete-game masterpiece. He scattered just two hits and racked up eight strikeouts, retiring the side in order in the seventh to clinch the win. "A win is a win at the end of the day," said Meyer, whose leadership is clearly setting the tone. "I'm super excited for this year... I think this team can be really good."
The fast start is even more impressive considering the condensed preparation time. With several players, including two starters, coming straight from the hardwood, the team had to maximize every opportunity. Catcher Landon Hill detailed the commitment: "It's been a lot of late nights. We really tried to get them throwing a little during basketball season and got a lot of live at-bats in a short amount of time."
Head coach Scott Koenigs, who also led the basketball team, is navigating the early season by emphasizing fundamentals. With a solid core of hitters and a proven ace in Meyer, the focus is on defense to round out the lineup. "Right now I'm going with the philosophy that whoever can play defense for us is going to get a chance," Koenigs stated, highlighting the team-first mentality driving this early success.
