While the Pittsburgh Pirates have been one of the better teams in Major League Baseball to start the season, and it's tough to be upset about anything that they've done, it's also fair to mention that Pittsburgh still needs to improve on the offensive side of the baseball.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have stormed out of the gates this MLB season, playing like one of baseball's better teams. While their strong start gives fans plenty to cheer about, there's a clear consensus that the offense needs a boost to turn this promising opening into a sustained playoff push.

Their pitching staff is a legitimate strength, arguably as good as any in the league. This foundation on the mound is what dreams of a deep October run are built on, and it looks solid for both the immediate and long-term future.

However, the spotlight now turns to the trade deadline and a specific area of need: third base. Analysis suggests upgrading the hot corner could be the roster's biggest priority. The current plan involves riding the hot hand, currently Nick Yorke (.289 average, .773 OPS), with Nick Gonzales waiting in the wings. Jared Triolo will also factor in upon returning from injury.

But as insider Danny Demilio notes, all three are likely better suited as versatile utility players rather than everyday starters at the position. This opens the door for the front office to pursue a trade for a more impactful, everyday third baseman, a move that could significantly lengthen their lineup.

The urgency of this pursuit will hinge entirely on the standings come July. If the Pirates continue their winning ways and remain in the thick of the playoff race, expect them to be aggressive buyers, with third base squarely in their sights.
