After a brief and largely under-the-radar stint under Andy Reid in Kansas City, a former Chiefs running back is getting another opportunity, this time with the Philadelphia Eagles. He barely saw the field last season, appearing in just one game, so this really feels like a clean slate for him.

Former Kansas City Chiefs running back Elijah Mitchell is getting a fresh start with the Philadelphia Eagles, joining their rookie minicamp roster after a forgettable stint under Andy Reid. Mitchell barely saw the field last season, appearing in just one game, making this opportunity feel like a clean slate for the once-promising rusher.

Mitchell isn't alone in his quest for a roster spot. Veteran running back Khalil Herbert is also at camp on a tryout, creating a competitive atmosphere in Philadelphia's backfield. "RBs Elijah Mitchell, Khalil Herbert trying out at Eagles rookie minicamp," Pro Football Talk reported on X.

Herbert, a former sixth-round pick in 2021, had a solid four-year run in Chicago, starting 12 games and at one point looking poised to become the lead back after David Montgomery's departure. However, both players face an uphill battle. The Eagles boast a crowded backfield headlined by Saquon Barkley, Tank Bigsby, and Will Shipley.

For Mitchell, this marks the latest stop in a whirlwind of roster moves. The New England Patriots released him shortly after signing him to a futures deal in February, following a brief and quiet tenure with the Chiefs where things never clicked.

It's a far cry from how Mitchell burst onto the scene. The San Francisco 49ers selected him in the sixth round of the 2021 draft, and he immediately turned heads. In his NFL debut against the Detroit Lions, he rushed for 104 yards and a touchdown. Stepping in for the injured Raheem Mostert, Mitchell finished his rookie season with 963 rushing yards in just 11 games, totaling over 1,100 yards from scrimmage and six touchdowns.

But injuries derailed his momentum. From 2022 to 2024, Mitchell struggled to stay healthy and consistent. The Chiefs took a flier on him last offseason with a one-year, $2.5 million deal, but it never panned out. Now, he's hoping to recapture that rookie magic in Philadelphia.
