The New York Mets are shaking things up as they prepare to host the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday, calling up top prospect A.J. Ewing for the series opener at Citi Field. With the team holding the worst record in Major League Baseball at 15-25, this move signals a fresh start for a struggling lineup.

Ewing, just 21 years old, is the Mets’ No. 2 prospect and ranks 78th among baseball’s Top 100 prospects, according to MLB Pipeline. Standing 5-foot-10 and weighing 160 pounds, the versatile outfielder and second baseman has drawn rave reviews for his blazing speed on the basepaths, sharp contact-hitting ability, and growing instincts at the plate. Scouts have compared his style to a modern-day spark plug—perfect for a team that’s been short on offensive firepower.

Selected in the fourth round of the 2023 MLB Draft out of an Ohio high school, Ewing has wasted no time proving his worth in the minors. This season, across 30 games with Binghamton and Syracuse, he’s hitting an impressive .339 with nine doubles, two triples, two home runs, 11 RBIs, and 17 stolen bases. Over his entire minor league career (251 games), he’s posted a .290 average with 49 doubles, 15 triples, 15 homers, 118 RBIs, and a staggering 101 stolen bases—a testament to his all-around game.

The timing couldn’t be better for the Mets, who have lost three of their last four games and are mired in offensive struggles. They currently rank dead last in RBIs, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage, and are tied for the fewest runs scored in MLB. Their lineup has also produced the second-fewest hits and the fourth-fewest home runs, making Ewing’s left-handed bat a welcome addition.

To make room for Ewing on the 40-man roster, the Mets will need to make a corresponding move. The lefty hitter is expected to bring energy and a much-needed spark to a team desperate for a turnaround. The series opener against the Tigers (19-22) is set for 7:10 p.m. EDT Tuesday in Flushing, and all eyes will be on the rookie as he makes his big-league debut.
