Luka Doncic's recovery from a Grade 2 hamstring strain is taking longer than the Lakers hoped, and the situation is starting to look concerning for the team's playoff hopes. The six-time All-Star suffered the injury during a regular-season game on April 2 and missed the entire first-round series against the Houston Rockets. While the Lakers managed to advance with a 4-2 win, they'll now have to face the Oklahoma City Thunder without their star playmaker.
According to ESPN's Shams Charania, Doncic is being evaluated on a week-to-week basis, with the recovery described as a "slow path." Speaking on Inside the NBA, Charania revealed, "One source told me in the last few days that it's still a slow path on Doncic's recovery. He's doing more and more on the court, but right now still not full-fledged running or full-contact workouts." That means Doncic will miss the start of the Western Conference semifinals against the Thunder.
This is a major blow for Los Angeles, especially considering the numbers Doncic has put up this season. In 64 games, he averaged a staggering 33.5 points, 7.7 rebounds, 8.3 assists, and 1.6 steals per game. That kind of production is nearly impossible to replace, and the Lakers will need a collective effort to fill the void.
Head coach JJ Redick will lean heavily on Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura to support LeBron James on both ends of the floor. Reaves, who returned from his own injury in Game 5, played a key role in helping the Lakers close out the Rockets. He'll need to bring that same energy against a Thunder team that swept the Phoenix Suns and has been resting since Wednesday.
The extra days off give Oklahoma City a distinct advantage—they're well-rested, well-practiced, and ready to pounce. For the Lakers, every game without Doncic is a test of depth and resilience. The question now is whether they can hold the line long enough for their superstar to return.
