The NBA playoffs are heating up, and Friday night promises edge-of-your-seat action as three teams fight to avoid Game 7s in the first round. The Houston Rockets, fresh off two must-win victories, are brimming with confidence as they prepare to face the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 6. After digging themselves into a 3-0 hole, the Rockets have clawed back to keep their season alive—and they're not done yet.
"We put ourselves in a bad position, but we can still make history and come back one game at a time," said Rockets big man Alperen Sengun. "Play at home, come back here, just do the same thing we're doing." Houston is aiming to become just the fifth team in NBA history to force a Game 7 after losing the first three games of a series. No team has ever won a series from that deficit, but the Rockets are writing their own story.
They'll likely have to do it without superstar Kevin Durant, who has missed the last three games with an ankle injury after sitting out the series opener with a bruised knee. Still, the team is locked in. "You cannot take off days anymore," said Houston's Jabari Smith Jr. "If you lose, you go home, and on this team, nobody wants to go home. Everybody is here to fight."
The Lakers couldn't close out the Rockets in Game 5, despite the return of Austin Reaves, the team's second-leading scorer in the regular season. Reaves had been sidelined since April 2 with an oblique injury but scored 22 points in 34 minutes off the bench in a 99-93 loss. LeBron James expects a sharper performance in Game 6. "A few of his jump shots were short. That makes sense. He hasn't played in a month," James said. "He gives us another ball-handler, another attacking threat at the point of attack, so it's great for us."
Friday's slate also features a pair of Eastern Conference matchups. First up, the underdog Orlando Magic will try again to close out their series against the top-seeded Detroit Pistons. Then, James Harden and the fourth-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers look to wrap up their series against the fifth-seeded Toronto Raptors. With everything on the line, expect high energy, big plays, and a whole lot of drama. Game on.
