Series Preview and Thursday Game Thread vs. The Ramajama Gumps

It's a pivotal weekend for the Diamond Dores as they hit the road to face the Ramajama Gumps in a crucial three-game SEC series. After letting a potential season-defining win over Texas slip away last weekend, this trip to Gumpland feels like a must-win—maybe even a season-saver.

First pitch is Thursday at 6 p.m. CT on ESPN2, followed by Friday and Saturday games at 6 p.m. and 1 p.m. CT, both on SECN+. If there's any good omen, here's hoping the Gumps' coaches bet the underdog this weekend.

The Gumps come in at 29-16 overall and 10-11 in SEC play. Their non-conference schedule was soft, with only one game against a ranked opponent—a narrow 8-7 win over Oregon State. In conference, it's been a rollercoaster: swept at Kentucky, then swept Florida and Auburn at home (impressive), took two of three at Oklahoma, then got swept at home by Arkansas. More recently, they dropped two of three at Texas and took two of three from Mississippi State at home. That six-game win streak against Florida and Auburn is basically the only thing keeping them ranked. Sound familiar? They're a lot like us—one hot stretch against good teams is carrying their résumé.

Against common conference opponents, the Diamond Dores are 7-5, while the Gumps are 4-8. That's a stat worth noting. Whatever you thought about Oklahoma, you should probably think the same about Ramajama. Win tonight, and we have a real shot at taking the series. Lose tonight… well, start stocking up on screaming pillows or planning a late run in Hoover.

Player to Watch: Everyone expected top prospect Justin Lebron to be the headline, but the Gumps' hottest hitter is senior catcher/right fielder Brady "The Bunch" Neal. He's slashing .355/.466/.599 with 14 doubles, a triple, 7 home runs, and 40 RBIs. He bats third for a reason. Lebron, meanwhile, is hitting just .264 in his draft year—but you know he'll probably find a way to make you pay.
