Time may march on, but some swings are simply timeless. More than 16 years after Hideki Matsui etched his name into baseball immortality with a World Series MVP performance, the legendary slugger proved that his power hasn't aged a day. At 51 years old, Matsui stepped into the batter's box at ShoreTown Ballpark in Lakewood and sent a batting practice pitch soaring over the fence, bringing back memories of his iconic 2009 blast that helped the Yankees clinch their 27th championship.

The moment was pure magic for the young players watching from the field. During a clinic hosted by Matsui's 55 Baseball Foundation, the former Yankees star treated dozens of local baseball and softball athletes to a display of vintage power. The crowd of aspiring players watched in disbelief as the ball sailed into nearly the same spot as his legendary upper-deck homer off Pedro Martínez in Game 6 of the 2009 World Series—minus the upper deck, of course.

"Beautiful ballpark first of all, and the participants of the camp were really great," Matsui said through an interpreter. "They were having a lot of fun today, and it was nice (to be) able to hit a home run in front of them."

The clinic, held during the Jersey Shore BlueClaws' second home stand of the 2026 season, carried an extra layer of nostalgia. The game that day featured the Phillies' affiliate taking on the Yankees' affiliate—a fitting echo of the 2009 World Series showdown where Matsui delivered six RBIs in the decisive game.

"It was a coincidence today to have the Phillies (affiliate) playing the Yankees (affiliate) in today's game, which was nice," Matsui added. "Got to speak to the younger players today, and it's just (my) hope that they will improve and make it to the next level."

What sets Matsui's foundation apart from typical athlete camps is the intentional focus on quality over quantity. The Hall of Fame-worthy hitter prioritizes one-on-one time with each participant, ensuring that every young player leaves with not just memories, but real lessons from a true baseball legend. For those lucky enough to witness it, Saturday wasn't just a clinic—it was a reminder that greatness never really fades.
