Former Atlanta Falcons kicker Younghoe Koo is making a bid for an NFL comeback this weekend at the New Orleans Saints rookie minicamp. The 31-year-old specialist is among a group of veteran free agents trying out during the two-day practice sessions, which are primarily designed for rookies but also allow teams to evaluate experienced talent.
Koo, who became a fan favorite in Atlanta after leading the NFL with 37 field goals and earning a Pro Bowl selection in 2020, saw his performance decline in subsequent seasons. The Falcons released him after just one game last year, and he later appeared in five games with the New York Giants before being let go in mid-December. Despite a tough 2024 season where he connected on only six of nine field goal attempts (66.7%), Koo boasts an impressive career hit rate of 85.3%.
An immigrant from South Korea, Koo played high school football in New Jersey and attended Georgia Southern before turning pro. He's now hoping to impress Saints coaches enough to earn a longer look this summer. New Orleans currently has incumbent kicker Charlie Smyth under contract, along with rookie free agent Mason Shipley from Texas, but neither has solidified their spot. If Koo can show the same form that made him a Pro Bowler, he could provide the Saints with an experienced option as they prepare for the upcoming season.
