Former Arizona volleyball star Sofia Maldonado Diaz has added another championship to her growing resume—this time as a professional.

After spending her first four years as a Wildcat and finishing her college career with a Final Four run at Louisville, Maldonado Diaz returned to Tucson last fall to train with head coach Rita Stubbs and the Arizona Wildcats. That preparation paid off in a big way when she helped the Dallas Pulse capture the Major League Volleyball (MLV) title in a thrilling "Match for a Million."

It was a dream debut season for both Maldonado Diaz and the first-year Pulse franchise. Dallas posted a strong 20-8 regular-season record, then entered the postseason as the No. 2 seed when play moved to Frisco, Texas, with a $1 million prize on the line.

In the semifinals on May 7, the Pulse swept past the third-seeded San Diego Mojo. Maldonado Diaz led all players with 21 kills and added four blocks, setting the tone for what was to come.

Two days later, Dallas faced the fourth-seeded Omaha Supernovas in a five-set championship thriller. Once again, Maldonado Diaz stepped up, leading her team with 26 kills and 12 digs for a clutch double-double as the Pulse emerged victorious, 3-2.

The championship capped an outstanding individual season for the former Wildcat. Maldonado Diaz was named to the 2026 MLV All-League First Team after finishing second in the league in total points (484) and kills (420), trailing only her teammate Mimi Colyer. She also ranked third in service aces with 21.

Before joining MLV, Maldonado Diaz played professionally in Romania and represented the Mexican National Team in several international tournaments. She then returned to her roots in Tucson to train alongside the Wildcats, sharpening her skills for the next chapter.

Arizona volleyball was well-represented in MLV this season. Two other former Wildcats—Jaelyn Hodge and Kamaile Hiapo—played for the Columbus Fury. Hodge, a versatile outside hitter and opposite, spent five years at Arizona and led the team to the NIVC title in 2024. Hiapo was the Wildcats' starting libero for four years.

For Maldonado Diaz, the championship is a testament to her hard work, her ties to Arizona volleyball, and her ability to shine on the biggest stage.
