Penn State men's lacrosse made history on Saturday, punching their ticket to the NCAA quarterfinals for the second straight year—a program first—with a hard-fought 10-6 victory over Army at Panzer Stadium.
While the final score suggests a close contest, the Nittany Lions dominated from start to finish. The only thing keeping Army within striking distance was the incredible performance of Patriot League Goaltender of the Year Sean Byrne, who made 20 saves to keep his team in the game. Penn State outshot the Black Knights by an eye-popping 55-29 margin, a testament to their relentless offensive pressure.
The stars of the day were sophomore sensation Hunter Aquino and redshirt freshman Andrew Beard, who each found the back of the net three times. Junior Brendan Leary also provided a memorable moment, scoring his first goal of the season on a breakaway that effectively sealed the win for the Nittany Lions.
At the faceoff X, Colby Baldwin was a force, winning 16 draws to give Penn State consistent possession. On the defensive end, freshman goalie Preston Hawkins wasn't tested as heavily as his Army counterpart, but he delivered when it mattered most, recording 12 crucial saves in his first career NCAA tournament start.
This victory also extends Penn State's winning streak over Army to four games, improving their all-time record against the Black Knights to 5-4. The Nittany Lions now await the winner of the matchup between top-seeded Princeton and Marist in the quarterfinals. Interestingly, Penn State already defeated Princeton 13-7 on the road earlier this season, while they have yet to face Marist. The date and time for the quarterfinal clash are still to be announced.
