Round four of the 2026 F1 season could be impacted with heavy rainfall on the radar for Sunday’s race

Get ready for a potential shake-up at the Miami Grand Prix! The FIA has just released a statement confirming they're "closely monitoring" the weather forecast for Sunday's race, as thunderstorms threaten to disrupt Round 4 of the 2026 Formula 1 season.

While Friday and Saturday are expected to be sunny and dry at the Hard Rock Stadium, the latest radar shows a dramatic shift: heavy thunderstorms are predicted to roll into the Miami Gardens area on Sunday afternoon. The race is currently scheduled for a 4 p.m. local start (9 p.m. BST), but with lightning on the radar, the FIA may be forced to move the start time earlier to avoid the worst of the weather.

This isn't a new challenge for the series. Fans will remember the 2024 Brazilian Grand Prix in São Paulo, where qualifying was completely canceled and rescheduled for Sunday morning before the race—which itself was pushed forward by a few hours to dodge heavy downpours. The precedent is there, and the FIA is ready to act.

Adding another layer of complexity, U.S. law strictly requires outdoor public events to be halted if a thunderstorm approaches, with spectators ordered to evacuate the area. That means the stakes are high for both safety and the race schedule. An FIA spokesperson confirmed Thursday night: "Having faced a similar situation last year in Miami with threats of thunderstorms, we have a contingency plan in place and will activate it if needed to minimize disruption to the on-track program."

This weekend marks the return of F1 after a five-week break, with Miami hosting Round 4 of the 2026 season (the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian races were canceled due to ongoing conflict in the Gulf). It's also a sprint race weekend, meaning just one 90-minute practice session on Friday before competitive action kicks off with sprint qualifying. With the weather potentially throwing a curveball, every second on track could be even more precious.

Stay tuned—and maybe pack a rain jacket for the stands, just in case!
