Penn State football will feature an overhauled depth chart under Matt Campbell. Here's our too-early picks for who starts in 2026.

Penn State football is shaping up to be one of the most fascinating storylines of the 2026 season, and for good reason. Under new head coach Matt Campbell, the Nittany Lions are undergoing a roster overhaul unlike anything in program history. With spring practice wrapped up and a depth chart still very much in flux, this team is a work in progress—but that's what makes it so exciting.

Campbell brought in 50 new players, nearly half of them following him from Iowa State. That means the majority of Penn State's top contributors will be transfers, former backups, or incoming freshmen. It's a fresh start for a program that's hungry to make noise, and the pieces are starting to fall into place.

One position that seems locked in is quarterback. Rocco Becht returns as the most experienced signal-caller in the nation, and he's well on track to fully recover from offseason shoulder surgery. Behind him, freshman Alex Manske is a top-tier prospect, though he's coming off his own injury issues. Don't sleep on senior Connor Barry, a Division III All-American who could find himself in the spotlight if needed.

At running back, the depth is impressive. Hansen is the steady, dependable starter, but James Peoples brings the flash and big-play potential. Sophomore Quinton Martin, who broke out during the Pinstripe Bowl, looks like a potential No. 1 option himself. That kind of versatility in the backfield is a coach's dream.

As the team gears up for preseason camp and a season opener against Marshall at Beaver Stadium, there's plenty to watch. The Nittany Lions are rebuilding, but with Campbell at the helm and a roster full of hungry talent, 2026 could be the year Penn State surprises everyone.
