Nebraska’s sweep keeps hope alive to host a regional

On a picture-perfect Mother's Day at Haymarket Park, the Nebraska Cornhuskers capped off a dramatic weekend with an 8-5 victory over Iowa, completing a series sweep that keeps their hopes of hosting an NCAA regional alive.

The game started with fireworks—literally. After the senior players' moms threw out the ceremonial first pitches, Iowa's Kooper Schulte wasted no time, launching Gavin Blachowicz's second pitch over the left-center field fence for a quick 1-0 lead. The Hawkeyes kept the pressure on, with Gable Mitchell doubling to right-center and scoring on a Caleb Wulf single. But Blachowicz settled in, striking out the next two batters to limit the damage.

Nebraska answered right back in the bottom of the first. Mac Moyer led off with a single, and after a Dylan Carey single and a hit-by-pitch to Drew Grego loaded the bases, Joshua Overbeek drew a walk to bring Moyer home. After one inning, Iowa led 2-1, but the tone was set: this was going to be a battle.

The Cornhuskers seized control in the second. Trey Fikes—making his second start of the weekend—led off with a double, advanced to third on a Rhett Stokes sacrifice bunt, and scored on a Moyer sacrifice fly to tie the game. Then Will Jesske stepped up and crushed a solo home run to left field, giving Nebraska a 3-2 lead they wouldn't relinquish.

The momentum carried into the third. Blachowicz delivered another perfect inning, and the offense rewarded him with more runs. Jett Buck launched a home run, and Trey Fikes scored again—this time on a Rhett Stokes single—pushing the lead to 5-2.

Blachowicz battled through a bases-loaded jam in the fourth, working around three walks to keep Iowa off the board. It was the kind of gritty performance that defines championship baseball, and it kept the Cornhuskers in control as they pushed toward the sweep.

With this win, Nebraska keeps its postseason dreams alive and proves once again that when the pressure is on, this team knows how to deliver.
