Dejan Joveljić scored to offset an early goal by Seattle's Paul Rothrock, helping Sporting Kansas City earn a 1-1 draw with the Sounders on Saturday. Seattle (6-1-2) took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd minute on an unassisted goal by Rothrock. It was the fourth goal this season for the 26-year-old Seattle native — one off his career high.

In a thrilling Major League Soccer showdown, Sporting Kansas City clawed their way back from an early deficit to secure a hard-fought 1-1 draw against the Seattle Sounders on Saturday. The match at Children's Mercy Park showcased the resilience of a struggling Sporting KC side against one of the league's hottest teams.

Seattle struck lightning early, with Paul Rothrock finding the back of the net in just the second minute. The unassisted goal marked the fourth of the season for the 26-year-old Seattle native, putting him just one shy of his career best. The Sounders, who entered the match with an impressive 6-1-2 record, looked poised to continue their dominant run.

But Sporting Kansas City refused to back down. Dejan Joveljić answered the call in the 18th minute, scoring unassisted to level the match. The goal was Joveljić's fifth of the season and his 23rd in 42 appearances for the club—a testament to his growing impact since joining from the LA Galaxy, where he netted 34 goals in 106 matches. More importantly, it ended a grueling 351-minute scoring drought across all competitions for Sporting KC, who had been outscored 11-0 in three consecutive road losses.

The match featured stellar goalkeeping on both ends. Stefan Cleveland, making his first start for Sporting KC, delivered a standout performance with seven saves. Interestingly, Cleveland spent the 2021-23 seasons with the Sounders, making 24 of his 29 career starts there and recording four clean sheets. On the other side, Andrew Thomas stopped six shots for Seattle, extending the Sounders' unbeaten streak to seven matches.

Seattle entered the match with 19 points through their first eight games, matching the club record set in 2012. They also fell just short of their 100th regular-season road victory since 2009—a milestone that would have extended their league-leading 99 road wins, which are 18 more than any other club over that span.

For Sporting KC, the draw provided a much-needed boost after a tough start to the season. The team is still searching for their first home win (0-3-2) but showed promising signs of turning things around. Next up, they'll hit the road to face the Portland Timbers on Saturday.
