In a performance that lived up to his newly earned MIAA Pitcher of the Year honors, Colby Deaver delivered a masterclass on the mound Thursday night, fanning 16 batters to lead the sixth-seeded Emporia State Hornets past No. 3 seed Missouri Southern 4-2 in the MIAA tournament quarterfinals in Edmond, Oklahoma.

The Lions, who came in ranked fifth in the Central Region, managed just four hits and two walks against Deaver's relentless arsenal. The right-hander needed 130 pitches to complete the game, but his dominance was undeniable—11 of his 16 strikeouts came on swings and misses, leaving hitters guessing all night.

Missouri Southern showed early fight, tying the game 2-2 in the fourth inning on Blake Jones' two-run homer. But that was the last real threat they could muster. After Jones' blast, the Lions went down in order over the next four innings, unable to solve Deaver's mix of speed and movement.

Brayden Luikart tried to spark a ninth-inning rally with a leadoff single, and Will Doherty drew a two-out walk to bring Jason Lazo to the plate with a chance to tie the game on one swing. But Deaver had the final answer, striking out Lazo on three pitches to end it.

The game's scoring started in the third when MSSU starter Owen Schneider hit a batter with two outs, then uncorked a wild pitch to put runners in scoring position. Brady Unrein made him pay with a two-run single to put Emporia State up 2-0.

After the Lions tied it, the game stayed quiet until the sixth. Schneider, who had thrown 94 pitches, went back out for the 95th—and watched Nathon Cruz send a solo homer over the left-field fence to give the Hornets a 3-2 lead. Emporia State added an insurance run in the eighth when reliever Marcus Young threw a wild pitch, allowing a runner to score from third.

For Missouri Southern, the loss puts their postseason hopes on hold. The Lions entered the tournament ranked fifth in the Central Region polls and seventh by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association. They'll now wait for the NCAA's final regional rankings on Sunday to see if they remain among the top eight teams that earn a spot in the Central Region tournament.

For fans of the game, Deaver's performance was a reminder of what makes college baseball so compelling—a pitcher at the peak of his powers, throwing 130 pitches of pure determination to keep his team's championship dreams alive.
