As gambling investigations jeopardize Brendan Sorsby’s NCAA eligibility, some believe the Cleveland Browns should target the young QB in a potential Supplemental Draft. But what level of pick would Andrew Berry be willing to lose?

The Cleveland Browns are no strangers to taking calculated risks at the quarterback position, and a new name has emerged as a potential target: Brendan Sorsby. The Texas Tech transfer quarterback is currently at the center of a gambling controversy that threatens his NCAA eligibility, but some analysts believe the Browns should be ready to pounce if he becomes available through the NFL Supplemental Draft.

Sorsby’s troubles began in late April when it was revealed he used a gambling app to place thousands of bets across multiple sports. The news led him to step away from the Texas Tech program and enter a rehabilitation facility for gambling addiction. The NCAA has since opened an investigation, and the Indiana Gaming Commission and Ohio Casino Control Commission are also looking into bets Sorsby placed during his previous stints at Indiana University and the University of Cincinnati.

With his college future in jeopardy, Sorsby has hired prominent attorney Jeffrey Kessler to fight for his eligibility for the 2026 season. However, if that effort fails, he could enter the NFL via the Supplemental Draft this summer—and that’s where the Browns enter the conversation.

NFL Draft analyst Todd McShay recently made a compelling case for Cleveland to target Sorsby. "If I’m the, I don’t know, the Browns," McShay said on his podcast. "If we have the quarterback coach, and we have the contract the right way, we have the psychologists putting a stamp on it…if we can get aligned, I think this guy’s worth it." McShay went even further, suggesting Sorsby could be worth a first-round pick. "I get to draft him, and I’m doing it with a first-round pick. And I’m doing that because I think he’s got a chance to be special."

For the Browns, a team that has aggressively reshaped its quarterback room in recent years, the idea of adding a young, talented arm via the Supplemental Draft is intriguing. General Manager Andrew Berry has shown he’s willing to think outside the box, but the question remains: what level of pick would he be willing to sacrifice for a player with off-field concerns? Sorsby’s talent is undeniable, but his path to the NFL is anything but straightforward.

Whether the Browns ultimately pursue Sorsby will depend on their internal evaluations and the support system they can provide. But in a league where second chances are common, this could be a fascinating gamble for Cleveland.
