Connor Bedard is about to get paid. That much is certain. The only real questions hanging over the Chicago Blackhawks this summer are the final numbers: just how much, and for how many years?
It also seems like a foregone conclusion that the 'C' will soon be stitched onto Bedard's sweater, making him the franchise's next captain. That decision appears to be a simple matter of timing.
Securing their generational talent is the easy part of a critical offseason for the Hawks. The rest of the rebuild puzzle is far more complex.
The team finished 29-39-14 this season, an 11-point improvement but still a distant 31st in the league—a familiar spot after three straight years at the bottom of the NHL standings. The message from the young core is clear: moral victories are no longer enough.
"We’ve got to start winning," Bedard stated after the season finale. "It’s been a while... it’s on us to go out there, have good summers, come back and make that leap."
That leap begins with their cornerstone. In his second NHL season, the 2023 first-overall pick took a significant step forward, posting career highs of 30 goals and 45 assists in just 69 games, solidifying his status as one of the league's most electrifying young stars.
While Bedard is eligible for restricted free agency, a protracted negotiation seems unlikely. The 20-year-old has consistently expressed his love for Chicago and belief in the team's direction. General Manager Kyle Davidson has been equally clear about Bedard's indispensable role in the rebuild.
"We’ll get that done," Davidson affirmed. "He’s so important to our team. He took such a big step forward this year... that’s certainly an important one to cross off the list."
Though a new deal is inevitable, its structure—the term and the cap hit—will send ripples through the entire organization. It will set the financial template and define the competitive timeline as other top prospects like Lukas Reichel and Kevin Korchinski approach the ends of their own entry-level contracts.
For the Blackhawks, locking down Bedard isn't just a transaction; it's the foundational move that will dictate every other decision in a pivotal summer, determining how quickly this storied franchise can return to contention.
