Tennessee basketball fans received some unexpected news on Friday as sophomore guard Ethan Burg announced he will not be returning to Rocky Top for the 2026-27 season. The Israeli native spent just one year with the Volunteers, leaving a mark with his dedication and international journey to the SEC.
Burg arrived in Knoxville last year after beginning his professional career with Bnei Herzliya Basket in the Israeli Basketball Super League. In his lone season wearing orange, he appeared in 33 games, making one start, and contributed 2.5 points in an average of 10.7 minutes per contest, providing depth and energy off the bench for a competitive Vols squad.
The heart of the story, however, lies in Burg's personal decision. In a heartfelt social media post addressed to Vol Nation, he explained his choice to return home to Israel to be closer to family. "Thank you for welcoming me, a guy from halfway across the world, and making Rocky Top feel like home sweet home from my very first day," Burg wrote. He expressed immense gratitude to the coaches, staff, teammates, and the incredible fan base, calling it an "honor" to represent the University of Tennessee.
While his on-court tenure was brief, Burg's message underscores the profound connections forged in college athletics. He concluded by affirming, "I'll always be proud to be a Tennessee Volunteer," ensuring his time in Knoxville will be a cherished chapter, even as he begins the next one closer to home.
