The Atlanta Braves have hit a tough snag in their otherwise stellar season, placing star right fielder Ronald Acuña Jr. on the 10-day injured list with a strained left hamstring. The move came Sunday, a day after Acuña exited Saturday night's game against the Colorado Rockies in the second inning. While trying to beat out a ground ball, he pulled up about halfway down the first-base line, grabbing at his hamstring in obvious pain.
This is a significant blow for the Braves, who boast the best record in baseball at 24-10 entering Sunday's matchup. Acuña, a five-time All-Star and the 2023 National League MVP, had been a key contributor, batting .252 with two home runs, nine RBIs, 17 runs, and a team-high seven steals. He had played in all 34 games this season, a remarkable feat considering he was coming off a torn ACL suffered in May 2024 that limited him to just 144 games over the previous two seasons.
In a silver lining, the Braves activated right-hander Spencer Strider from the injured list ahead of his scheduled start on Sunday. The 2023 All-Star is making his season debut after recovering from a strained oblique. To clear a roster spot, the Braves optioned right-hander Hunter Stratton to Triple-A Gwinnett on Saturday, and on Sunday, they selected the contract of outfielder José Azócar from the minors to fill Acuña's spot.
For now, Braves fans will have to wait and see how the team adjusts without their dynamic leadoff man. But with a deep roster and Strider back on the mound, Atlanta is still well-positioned to weather this storm.
