The Crimson Tide has picked a bad time for the bats to be turning into wet noodles. It’s the final SEC and regular season test of the year and there is no time to relax and mudita.

The Alabama Crimson Tide softball team is heading into their final SEC series of the regular season, and the timing couldn't be more critical. With the NCAA tournament looming, the Tide needs to shake off a recent offensive slump and refocus against a South Carolina team that's been heating up at just the right time.

Let's be real—this isn't the moment for Alabama's bats to go quiet. While some fans might think the last two games were just a bump in the road, and that the Gamecocks will be an easy out, the reality is far different. South Carolina has been playing solid softball lately, and with NCAA seeding on the line, every game matters.

To be fair, the Tide didn't drop as far in the rankings as many expected. Here's where they stand in the latest polls (released before Monday's game):

Softball America: 13 ↑ 8 ↑ 6 ↑ 4 ↔ 4 ↔ 4 ↔ 4 ↓ 6 ↑ 4 ↑ 1 ↓ 2 ↓ 3 ↔ 3
D1Softball: 14 ↑ 10 ↑ 9 ↑ 8 ↑ 5 ↔ 5 ↑ 4 ↓ 6 ↑ 4 ↑ 3 ↑ 2 ↔ 2 ↓ 4
USAToday/NFCA: 16 ↑ 13 ↑ 9 ↑ 7 ↑ 6 ↔ 6 ↔ 6 ↓ 7 ↑ 4 ↑ 3 ↔ 3 ↔ 3 ↓ 4
ESPN/USA Softball: 15 ↑ 10 ↑ 8 ↑ 5 ↑ 4 ↔ 4 ↔ 4 ↓ 6 ↑ 5 ↑ 3 ↑ 2 ↔ 2 ↓ 3

But perhaps even more important than the polls is the RPI, which can shift dramatically this time of year.

Weather could also play a factor. Forecasts are changing hour by hour, so expect cool temperatures—just when you thought it was safe to put away your winter gear. Rain is possible, though not expected to be a washout, but delays or game time changes are definitely on the table.

Now, about South Carolina: The Gamecocks had a rocky start to the season, dropping a pair to Virginia Tech at home and struggling in a California tournament against Nebraska, Oregon, and UCLA. In SEC play, they lost 12 of their first 15 games. But don't let that fool you. This team has found its rhythm, taking two of three from both Missouri (on the road) and Texas A&M earlier this month, plus picking up wins at Clemson and North Carolina. Since being swept by Florida—the only time they've been swept all spring—the Gamecocks are 7-2 and have clawed their way into the national polls at No. 21/21/23/NR.

Alabama knows firsthand how dangerous South Carolina can be. Last spring, the Tide took two of three in Columbia to finish the regular season, only to turn around and lose to the Gamecocks in the first round of the SEC Tournament. History has a way of repeating itself if you're not careful.

What makes this matchup particularly tough? South Carolina boasts the fourth-lowest team ERA in SEC play at 2.90, and their pitching staff has allowed just 17 home runs in conference action—tied for the fewest in the league. However, they have given up the third-most doubles (29), so if Alabama can find some gaps, they might be able to manufacture runs.

This series is shaping up to be a true test of character for the Crimson Tide. With postseason positioning on the line, it's time for the bats to wake up and the defense to lock in. No pressure—just everything that matters.
