The Tigers’ sixth ranked prospect missed most of the spring with an oblique injury.

The Detroit Tigers' infield is getting a fresh look. Utilityman Zach McKinstry, who took a beating in Thursday's game, has been placed on the 10-day injured list with left hip and abdominal inflammation. Stepping into the spotlight to fill the void is infielder Hao-Yu Lee, who has been recalled from Triple-A Toledo and is set to make his major league debut Friday night in Boston. He'll bat eighth and take the field at third base, wearing number 50.

This moment has been a long time coming for the 23-year-old prospect, whom the Tigers acquired from the Philadelphia Phillies in 2023 for pitcher Michael Lorenzen. Ranked as the organization's sixth-best prospect by MLB Pipeline, Lee brings an exciting blend of power and speed to the big leagues, having launched 14 homers and swiped 22 bags last year in Toledo. His journey to this debut was delayed this spring by an oblique strain, which cost him a chance to play for Team Chinese Taipei and sidelined him for most of camp.

At the plate, Lee is a gritty, hard-nosed competitor known for spraying line drives to all fields, with a particular knack for handling left-handed pitching—a skill that will be crucial as he steps into McKinstry's role. While he's shown improving plate discipline, the big league test will be how he handles premium breaking balls, an area that has been a challenge. Defensively, he's most comfortable at second base but is learning the hot corner at third, bringing an aggressive style that also plays well on the basepaths.

Tonight at Fenway Park, a new chapter begins for Hao-Yu Lee and the Tigers. It's the kind of debut that reminds every fan why they love the game—a young talent getting his shot on the biggest stage.
