The Orioles are proving they know how to start a game in style—and finish one, too. For the second straight day, Baltimore jumped out to a three-run first inning. And while they briefly let Miami back into the contest, the Birds showed their resilience, with Brandon Young settling in for a quality start in a 7-4 series-clinching win over the Marlins.
It all started with a bang. After Gunnar Henderson struck out swinging, Marlins starter Eury Pérez lost his grip, walking Taylor Ward on four pitches and plunking Adley Rutschman to put two runners on for Pete Alonso. Down 0-2 in the count, Alonso turned on a 99-mph fastball and launched it 407 feet to left-center. Just like that, the Orioles had a 3-0 lead before Young even stepped on the rubber.
Young cruised through the first two outs on just four pitches, but Miami showed some two-out fight. With Young one strike away from a clean inning, former Oriole Connor Norby worked a six-pitch walk. Kyle Stowers followed with a single to right, and center fielder Jakob Marsee punched a two-run double to left. After a walk to Christopher Morel, Owen Caissie tied the game with a single up the middle. Young finally escaped by getting Joe Mack to ground out on a 2-1 curveball.
Both pitchers settled in over the next two innings, trading zeros until the Orioles struck again in the fourth. Leody Taveras legged out a two-out double, and Dylan Beavers followed with a ground-rule double to give Baltimore a 4-3 lead. It was a welcome change to see the Birds deliver with two outs—and they kept that momentum rolling into the fifth.
Ward drew another walk, and Rutschman worked a full count before ripping a ball to right field. With Ward already moving on the 3-2 pitch, he scored easily to make it 5-3. Meanwhile, Young found his rhythm, retiring batters efficiently and giving the Orioles exactly what they needed: a quality start and a series win.
