NEW YORK - Delayed by rain for nearly three hours, it's just about time for the first pitch of Royals-Yankees on a raw (and now late) Sunday afternoon at Yankee Stadium.

Ben Rice was elevated to the leadoff spot by Aaron Boone, with the lefty-hitting first baseman "swinging it about as good as anyone in the league,'' said the manager.

Boone also wanted some of his lefty hitters against Royals lefty Cole Ragans, viewed as a neutral starter. So, Ryan McMahon is at third base, batting ninth, and Trent Grisham is in center field, batting fifth.

However, Jazz Chisholm Jr. is not in the lineup (Amed Rosario gets the start at second base on Sunday).

Over his last seven games, Chisholm is 2-for-20 with two singles (one of them a pop fly that fell between two Angels infielders last Wednesday) and nine strikeouts.

Chisholm has drawn five walks in his last four games. But he's also in a 4-for-34 (.118) slide and 6-for-49 (.122), without a home run in his first 73 at-bats.

A reliever for the Astros' Class AA affiliate this year, Sanchez, 22, has yielded one run in seven innings over his first five appearances with eight strikeouts and four walks allowed.

Over parts of five minor league seasons in the Houston organization, Sanchez has posted 10 saves and a 3.80 ERA, with 248 Ks (124 walks) in 189.1 innings (105 games, six starts).

Shewmake, 28, was batting .250 with a .627 OPS in 10 games this year at Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes Barre.

Claimed off waivers by the Yankees a year ago, Shewmake did not make an appearance with the big club in 2025. He has 31 combined games of MLB experience with the 2023 Atlanta Braves and 2024 Chicago White Sox.
