Jasson Dominguez, two days after getting called up from Triple-A, was struck by an 89.1 mph cutter from Texas Rangers starter Nathan Eovaldi while batting in the fourth inning of New York’s 3-0 loss.

The New York Yankees are holding their breath after top outfield prospect Jasson Dominguez was hit by a pitch on his left elbow during Tuesday night's 3-0 loss to the Texas Rangers. The 23-year-old switch-hitter will undergo further testing when the team returns to New York, leaving his status uncertain after just three games back in the majors.

Dominguez, called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre just two days earlier, was struck by an 89.1 mph cutter from Rangers starter Nathan Eovaldi while batting in the fourth inning. The ball caught him squarely on the elbow, and despite initial swelling, Dominguez remained optimistic after the game. "It got me right on the elbow, and right now, just swelling," he said. "As of right now, I don't feel any concern."

After being checked out by the trainer and manager Aaron Boone, Dominguez initially stayed in the game. But the pain proved too much once he returned to the dugout, and Max Schuemann replaced him in left field for the bottom of the fourth. The Yankees announced a left elbow contusion, though X-rays at the ballpark were inconclusive. Boone acknowledged the uncertainty: "Hopefully the tests reveal not much and it's just bruising and we'll work through it. But unknown at this point."

The timing couldn't be tougher for Dominguez, who hit .257 with 10 home runs and 47 RBIs in 123 games last season. He was left off the Opening Day roster as the Yankees opted for Aaron Judge, Trent Grisham, and Cody Bellinger in the outfield, with Giancarlo Stanton serving as primary designated hitter. Dominguez got his call-up after Stanton landed on the 10-day injured list with a right calf strain, and he started all three games in the series against Texas—serving as DH the first two games before starting in left field Tuesday. He went 1 for 9 (.111) in the series.

Now, after just three games back in the big leagues, Dominguez faces another hurdle. But the young outfielder is keeping perspective. "I mean this is baseball," he said. "It is what it is." For Yankees fans, the hope is that the tests reveal nothing more than a bruise, and that one of their most promising young talents can get back on the field soon.
