After the New York Yankees lost one of their long-ballyhooed prospects to injury, they called up the latest much-anticipated rookie.

The New York Yankees are turning to another highly anticipated rookie to fill a sudden gap in their lineup. After losing top prospect Jasson Dominguez to a shoulder injury on Thursday, the team is calling up 6-foot-7 power hitter Spencer Jones, as first reported by the New York Post.

Jones, 24, brings a rare combination of size, speed, and raw power to the major leagues. Drafted 25th overall out of Vanderbilt in 2022, he has been crushing baseballs ever since, posting an .848 career OPS with 83 home runs across 415 minor league games. This season at Triple-A Somerset, he's been even more impressive, slashing a .958 OPS with 11 homers in just 142 plate appearances.

But here's where it gets interesting—and a little nerve-wracking for Yankees fans. Jones also strikes out a lot. His 32.4% strikeout rate this spring is nearly identical to his 32.7% career mark. That swing-and-miss tendency has kept him from being a consensus top prospect, but when he does connect, the results are jaw-dropping. His maximum exit velocity of 117.4 mph leads all of Triple-A this season. That's elite company, even for a Yankees system known for producing power hitters.

Don't let the strikeouts fool you, though. Jones is more than just a slugger. He's an athletic lefty swinger who stole a career-best 43 bases in 55 attempts in 2023, and swiped 29 bags across Double-A and Triple-A last season. He's currently ranked as the No. 6 prospect in the Yankees system, though he has slipped from Baseball America's top 100 overall list.

The call-up comes after a tough break for Dominguez, who crashed into the chain-link fence while making a first-inning catch in the Yankees' 9-2 win over the Texas Rangers. The former top-20 prospect stayed down for several minutes before being carted off the field. Manager Aaron Boone confirmed that Dominguez tested negative for a concussion, but an MRI revealed a low-grade AC sprain in his shoulder—another frustrating setback for a player trying to establish himself as a full-time big leaguer.

For Yankees fans, this is the classic baseball story: one prospect's injury opens the door for another. Jones brings a rare mix of towering power and surprising speed, but his high strikeout rate means the journey won't always be smooth. Whether he can adjust to major league pitching will be one of the most intriguing storylines to watch in the coming weeks.
