The New York Yankees are bringing back a familiar face, calling up shortstop Anthony Volpe for his 2026 season debut. After a stint at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, the 25-year-old is set to rejoin the big league club, giving the Yankees a boost in the infield.

Volpe's path back to the majors wasn't straightforward. Following offseason shoulder surgery, he began the year on a rehab assignment. However, when that assignment ended, the Yankees opted to send him to Triple-A instead of activating him, a decision that raised some eyebrows. But with starting shortstop Jose Caballero injuring his right middle finger during Sunday's game against Milwaukee, the team needed a reliable replacement at shortstop—and Volpe was the obvious choice. Caballero is returning to New York to see team doctors for further evaluation.

In 18 minor league games this season—including both rehab and regular Triple-A action—Volpe is hitting .221 with one home run, eight RBI, and 11 runs scored. While those numbers aren't flashy, they reflect a player shaking off rust after surgery. Last season, Volpe struggled at the plate, batting .212 over 153 regular-season games, and his defense slipped too. After winning a Gold Glove as a rookie, he committed 19 errors and posted a career-low .963 fielding percentage in 2025.

Manager Aaron Boone acknowledged the tough decision to send Volpe down earlier this year, saying, "We want him to have the best chance to be successful. Jose Caballero has played really well and has been a key factor in our strong start. That doesn't change how we feel about Anthony or the kind of player we think he is and will be. Competition among good players is ultimately a great thing for us."

Now, with a fresh opportunity and a chance to prove himself, Volpe returns to the Bronx. For Yankees fans, this call-up is a reminder of the promise he showed as a rookie—and a chance to see if he can rediscover that form. Whether you're cheering from the stands or repping his jersey, one thing's clear: the shortstop position just got a lot more interesting.
