On Tuesday's episode of the podcast Talkin' Yanks, New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone announced that pitching prospect Elmer Rodriguez will make his Major League debut against the Texas Rangers on Wednesday.

Before last night's opener against the Rangers, the Yankees placed designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton on the 10-day injured list with a low-grade calf strain.

Instead of calling up a pitcher to bring their total back up to 13, Boone stated that they've decided to promote an infielder. Utility man Max Schuemann, who was at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, will get the call to the Majors.

"The roster oddity here is that, while the Yankees don't need a fifth starter this week, they'll certainly need one before Carlos Rodon is ready to return," Adam Weinrib of Yanks Go Yard wrote Tuesday.

"There's an opening on May 5, and Rodón needs a pair of rehab starts before he'll be elevated. That means Schuemann - hitting .203 with a .659 OPS - will be your "jack-of-all-trades" placeholder for either that pitcher or [Anthony] Volpe," Weinrib added. "The Yankees, with two uncuttable long men in Ryan Yarbrough and Paul Blackburn, will play a pitcher short in the interim."

Schuemann spent parts of the last two seasons with the Athletics and can play all over the diamond. He may not be with the Yankees long, but he's a valuable asset to have on the bench while Stanton is out.
