The New York Yankees are facing an unexpected dilemma as shortstop Anthony Volpe nears the end of his rehab assignment—and the decision ahead could reshape the team's infield dynamic for the foreseeable future.
Volpe underwent hand surgery at the conclusion of the 2025 season, and general manager Brian Cashman had previously made it clear that the 24-year-old would reclaim his starting shortstop role once healthy. "I believe in the player still," Cashman said. "He's 24 years old. I don't think the New York stage is too big for him. It's just still finding his way."
But baseball has a way of rewriting plans, and Jose Caballero has been writing his own story with a hot start in Volpe's absence. The replacement shortstop has seized the opportunity, forcing the Yankees' front office to pause and reconsider their original blueprint.
According to the New York Post's Mark W. Sanchez, the Yankees face a Monday deadline to decide Volpe's fate: bring him back to the majors—and in what capacity—or formally option him to the minor leagues for the first time in his three-year big league career. "During the majority of those seasons, though, the Yankees did not have Caballero or any legitimate alternative option at shortstop," Sanchez noted.
YES Network analyst Jack Curry added fuel to the speculation, suggesting that a return to the Bronx may not be immediate. "The indications that I'm getting from talking to people around the Yankees… is that the Yankees are not going to move forward and promote Volpe to the Major Leagues. Not just yet," Curry said.
For a player who has been the face of the Yankees' infield future, this is undoubtedly a frustrating turn. Caballero's emergence has complicated what once seemed like a straightforward path back to the starting lineup. But in the long grind of a 162-game season, opportunities have a way of circling back.
Cashman's earlier vote of confidence still echoes, and the Yankees know that depth is a luxury—not a problem. Whether Volpe waits in Scranton or returns to the big leagues, his talent suggests this is merely a detour, not a dead end.
