The New York Yankees have suffered a significant blow to their rotation, as ace Max Fried has been placed on the 15-day injured list with a left elbow bone bruise. While the team is optimistic that surgery won't be required, Fried will be shut down from throwing for several weeks, meaning this won't be a quick return.

The 32-year-old left-hander exited his start against the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday after just three innings, allowing three runs on five hits and a walk over 61 pitches. Fried described a hyperextension sensation in his elbow that had been bothering him on and off throughout the season before finally becoming too painful to pitch through. The Yankees have also sent his MRI to Dr. Neal ElAttrache for a second opinion.

This injury comes at a particularly tough time for New York, as Fried has been outstanding this season. Through 61 2/3 innings—the most of any pitcher in the majors—he posted a stellar 3.21 ERA, anchoring a rotation that had high hopes for a deep postseason run. The Yankees inked Fried to an eight-year, $218 million deal back in December 2024, making it the fourth-largest contract ever given to a pure pitcher.

For Yankees fans, this is a frustrating setback, especially given Fried's track record of durability and dominance. The team will now have to rely on its depth to fill the void, with the hope that Fried can return healthy and effective later this summer. In the meantime, expect the bullpen and younger arms to step up in his absence.
