The New York Yankees' farm system is stacked with talent, and three of their most exciting prospects are knocking on the door of the big leagues. Spencer Jones, George Lombard Jr., and Carlos Lagrange are all currently lighting it up at Triple-A, but according to ESPN's Kiley McDaniel, one of them has a clear edge when it comes to getting the call to the Bronx.
In McDaniel's updated prospect rankings for the Yankees, the top five goes Lombard, Elmer Rodriguez, Dax Kilby, Lagrange, and then Jones. Rodriguez just made his MLB debut on Wednesday, and Kilby is still in the lower minors. So the spotlight turns to the remaining three: who gets the next call-up?
McDaniel points out that while all three could be in the mix depending on what the Yankees need, Jones holds a significant advantage: he's already on the 40-man roster. "Jones, Lombard and Lagrange could all be next, depending on what's needed, though Jones is on the 40-man, so he has an edge," McDaniel writes.
That 40-man roster status matters more than you might think. Most teams run their 40-man rosters near capacity, so adding a new player often means removing someone else, which exposes them to waivers and the risk of being claimed by another team. The Yankees won't rush Lombard or Lagrange, but they also won't hold them back once they're ready. For Jones, though, the path is clearer. If an injury hits the big league club, he can be called up without any roster gymnastics.
And when you look at what Jones brings to the table, it's easy to see why the Yankees are eager to get him up. Standing 6-foot-7 with incredible raw power, he's a left-handed slugger who could make Yankee Stadium's short porch in right field look even smaller. With that combination of power and a clean path to the majors, Spencer Jones might just be the next Yankee to make his debut—and sooner rather than later.
