Big things are brewing in Cincinnati. According to a report from the Cincinnati Business Courier, Xavier University has made a massive commitment to its men's basketball program, tripling the budget for the upcoming 2026-27 season. This move signals that the Musketeers are done just trying to keep pace—they're ready to compete.
To put it in perspective, Xavier operated on a budget of roughly $5.5 million for the 2025-26 season, as reported by The Enquirer this past March. In the current landscape of college hoops, where NIL collectives, transfer portal bidding wars, and expanded coaching staffs are the new norm, that number was below the Big East average. And the gap between contenders and the rest of the league is increasingly measured in dollars.
The results on the court reflected that gap. Xavier stumbled to a 15-18 record last season—just their second losing campaign in 30 years—and set a dubious program record with 14 conference losses. It was a tough season for a proud program, but head coach Richard Pitino remained confident in the school's plan to boost its NIL resources.
Now, that plan is clearly in motion. With the budget tripled, Xavier has gone all-in on the transfer portal. According to 247Sports, the Musketeers' transfer haul ranks 16th nationally, while On3Sports even slots them at No. 1. This week alone, Xavier added its seventh transfer: Drake guard Braden Appelhans. He joins a star-studded incoming class that includes productive high-major transfers like Mike Nwoko (LSU), Rubén Dominguez (Texas A&M), and Tru Washington (Miami, Fla.)—all added within a four-day span. Last year, by comparison, Xavier landed just one high-major transfer.
A class like this would have been nearly impossible without a serious financial infusion. And for fans, the message is clear: Xavier isn't just rebuilding—they're reloading for a major comeback. The investment is visible on paper, and soon, it will be visible on the court.
