In a major move for the Xaverian Brothers football program, four-star quarterback Will Wood has committed to Penn State, announcing his decision Friday on Instagram and X (formerly Twitter). The Natick native, who will enroll early this spring, represents a significant pickup for the Nittany Lions as they continue to build for the future.
Wood's journey to this moment has been anything but straightforward. After backing up Henry Hasselbeck during Xaverian's 2023 Division 1 state championship run, he took the reins as a sophomore and has led the Hawks to back-to-back state title appearances. Now entering his third consecutive season as starter, the 6-foot-2 signal-caller has seen his recruitment explode.
Rated as the No. 3 Class of 2027 prospect in Massachusetts by both 247Sports and ESPN, Wood sits behind only Tabor Academy's Peter Bourque—who recently flipped from Michigan to Virginia Tech—at the quarterback position. Nationally, he checks in at No. 33 among quarterbacks on 247Sports and is ESPN's No. 20 pocket passer.
"For me, it happened later. It was crazy," Wood said. "I wasn't the highest recruited guy, but I was around a lot of those dudes. It put a chip on my shoulder. I'm happy with where I've ended up."
That chip grew heavy as offers poured in from over 20 programs, including SEC power Arkansas, ACC contenders North Carolina, Syracuse, Stanford, and Wake Forest, Big 12's West Virginia, plus a host of Ivy League and FCS options. The past month proved particularly intense, with Penn State's coaching staff—including first-year head coach Matt Campbell—making an in-home visit last week.
"When you find the right fit, it kind of accelerates things," Wood explained. "Why would I wait if I know where things are trending? It wasn't in my plan, but it's just what I felt."
Xaverian head coach Al Fornaro has watched Wood's development up close, from backup to leader of a championship-caliber program. "He's a great young man, and he's a loyal person. If he tells you he's going to do something, he does it," Fornaro said.
For Wood, the commitment brings relief and renewed focus. "The past month or two has given me an appreciation for just playing football," he said. "Obviously I've been training and all that, but my mind's been elsewhere. I'm happy that I'm able to get back to that."
With his college future secured, Wood can now focus entirely on leading Xaverian through another championship run—and proving why Penn State was right to trust in his development.
