Apr. 14—PULLMAN — To earn their latest commitment, Washington State coaches reached to the Division II ranks and won a key recruiting battle. Washington State's men's basketball program has made a significant and intriguing addition to its roster, securing a commitment from one of the most coveted players in the transfer portal. The Cougars announced the signing of Central Missouri guard Lazerek Houston, marking a major recruiting win for head coach David Riley and his staff.

Houston arrives in Pullman after a spectacular true freshman season at the Division II level, where he wasn't just good—he was historically dominant. The 6-foot guard averaged a staggering 20.8 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists per game, earning him both MIAA Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year honors. His scoring prowess was on full display with seven 30-point games, including a 35-point, 11-assist debut.

This signing represents a strategic move by the Cougars, who have successfully mined the D-II ranks before. The blueprint for Houston's transition already exists within the program. Much of WSU's success last season was fueled by former Division II transfer Jaylen Wells, who parlayed his time in Pullman into becoming the No. 39 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. Houston, widely regarded as the top Division II player in this transfer cycle, will look to follow a similar path.

Houston's commitment is a crucial piece for Coach Riley as he rebuilds the roster. He is the second offseason addition, joining Manhattan transfer Fraser Roxburgh, and will be part of a core six-player group for the 2026-27 season. His dynamic playmaking and scoring ability are desperately needed to offset the departure of 12 players from last year's squad, including 10 via the transfer portal.

For Cougar fans, the arrival of Lazerek Houston brings excitement and a proven track record of production. While the jump to high-major Division I basketball is significant, his elite freshman season and Washington State's recent history of developing D-II stars suggest he has all the tools to become the next standout in Pullman.
