The Washington State Cougars men's basketball program continues to build its roster for the future, securing a commitment from Providence transfer guard Jaylen Harrell. This marks the sixth major addition for head coach David Riley this offseason as he reshapes the team following significant departures.
Harrell, a 6-foot-5, 210-pound guard, brings a promising pedigree to Pullman. A former consensus four-star prospect and the top-ranked recruit in Massachusetts for the class of 2025, he chose Providence over offers from several major programs including Alabama, Washington, and Georgetown. His freshman season with the Friars was unfortunately cut short after just six games due to a season-ending injury, where he averaged 3.7 points in limited action.
His high school resume, however, points to his high ceiling. As a senior at CATS Academy, Harrell put up impressive numbers, averaging 22.1 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 7.2 assists per game. His outstanding play earned him back-to-back Massachusetts Gatorade Player of the Year honors in 2024 and 2025, showcasing the scoring and all-around talent the Cougars are adding.
Harrell joins an influx of offensive-minded players in this transfer class, which includes scorers like Sebastian Akins (Wake Forest), RJ Jones (TCU), and Lazerek Houston (Central Missouri). This trend suggests Coach Riley is doubling down on the up-tempo, offensive system that defined his successful tenure at Eastern Washington and his first season with WSU.
The new additions are crucial for offsetting the loss of ten players to the transfer portal, including key contributors like Ace Glass (Vanderbilt), ND Okafor (Ole Miss), and Ri Vavers (Memphis). Harrell now joins a 2026-27 roster that currently stands at nine players, blending new transfers with returners like Dominick Robinson as the Cougars look to build a cohesive and potent unit for the upcoming season.
