Mariah Wright is doing things that most high school softball players can only dream of—and she's only a sophomore.
The daughter of Salem baseball coach John Wright, Mariah has been rewriting the record books at Plymouth Christian Academy this season. In a recent 7-1 victory over Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest, she made a routine play at shortstop that had the announcer jokingly playing the SportsCenter theme song. But there's nothing routine about what this young star is accomplishing on the field.
Despite Plymouth Christian being a Division 3 school with just 251 students, the Eagles have taken on some of Michigan's toughest competition. They've faced Salem, Canton, Plymouth, Livonia Stevenson, Novi, Detroit Country Day, and Boyne City. They split a series with third-ranked Laingsburg and have taken on No. 4 Grass Lake and No. 5 Clinton, with No. 10 Lansing Catholic still on the schedule.
Through it all, Wright has been unstoppable. She's hitting an incredible .511 with a .617 on-base percentage, and her stat line reads like a video game: 11 doubles, three home runs, 25 RBI, 19 runs, and five stolen bases—all while playing elite defense at shortstop.
Last week, she tied the program record for RBI in a game with seven, matching teammate Clara Groen (2024) and current Alma College catcher Chloe Paryaski (2025). She also tied the single-game home run record with two, joining Maddie Yeager (2023) and Kate Harris (2025). This comes after she broke the school's hitting record as a freshman.
"She's just been very consistent as a fielder and hitter," said coach Jori Groen. "She's definitely been a leader in the infield, letting the girls know where the play needs to be made and what to do with the ball. She's also been very consistent in fielding the ball and taking charge while at the plate."
Wright plays for the Tennessee Mojo Fastpitch program, a club known for developing elite talent. With two more seasons ahead of her, it's exciting to think about what records she might shatter next—and what kind of gear she'll need to keep up with her rising star power.
